Knowing & Acting designs, implements, and supports projects that contribute to respect for human rights and the protection of the ocean. Knowing & Acting's services are primarily aimed at companies, international organizations, and foundations committed to these issues.

Preparation and launch of the Space4Ocean Alliance at the United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC)

Centre National d’Etudes Spatiales (CNES) March 2024-June 2025 France Ocean

Role and action of Knowing & Acting

Support to the CNES Project team to mobilize stakeholders, in partnership with a complementary consultant, oceanographer, space and ocean specialist; organize and implement the governance structure, organize monthly Steering committee meetings with international partners, provide secretarial support for Steering committee meetings; monitor and follow-up action items; organize in-person meetings (Paris, Musée National de la Marine (French National Marine museum), Monaco, Nice, Norway, etc.).

Results

The Space4Ocean Alliance was signed on June 9th in Nice by 27 international partners during the UNOC conference, in the presence of the French Minister of Higher Education and Research, and partners from nearly 20 countries (Argentina, Canada, China, France, Germany, Gabon, Greece, Italy, Kenya, Maldives, Malta, Monaco, Norway, Portugal, Senegal, etc.). The founding document was presented to the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for the Ocean, Peter Thomson, by the President of CNES, François Jacq, at the closing of UNOC 3 on June 13th.

Perspectives

Sustainable development and management of the partnership, organization of upcoming meetings, fundraising for the program, continued expansion of the Alliance to include new partners.

Organization of a round table on ocean and human rights as part of the official program of the United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC)

IHRB, Rafto Foundation for Human Rights November 2024 - June 2025 Nice, France Human Rights Ocean

Role and action of Knowing & Acting

Knowing & Acting initiated the event in the UNOC public area (green zone, “The Whale”): initiation of the idea; mobilization of public authorities and partners; preparation of UN files to obtain the status of an event in the official program (among the 60 selected, out of more than 600 applications received); relations with the French Ministry of Culture, organizer for this venue; organization and facilitation of the round table with the Indian, Nigerian and Norwegian partners of the Ocean and Human Rights platform; collaboration with the Metis Arts and Development fund of the French Development Agency (AFD).

Results

Raising awareness among UNOC's public about the link between ocean protection and preservation and respect for human rights. Very fruitful exchanges with an international audience (Brazil, France, India, Nigeria, Philippines, Seychelles, etc.) and ongoing interactions between participants, which could lead to new collaborations. Nathalie Komatitsch has been invited to join the Ocean and Human Rights platform as a human rights and ocean expert.

Perspectives

The Ocean and Human Rights platform, Knowing & Acting and Nathalie Komatitsch will carry out new projects and organize new ocean and human rights roundtables at UNOC 4, in Korea in 2028.

Organization of an ocean and human rights session with the Ocean and Human Rights platform, on the occasion of the United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC)

Institute for Human Rights and Business (IHRB), Rafto Foundation for Human Rights November 2024 - June 2025 Nice-Monaco Human Rights Ocean

Role and action of Knowing & Acting

Knowing & Acting initiated the event: design, mobilization of partners and guests, coordination with the teams of the IHRB and the Rafto Foundation for Human Rights, facilitation (Nathalie Komatitsch moderated the session).

Results

A session dedicated to human rights and the ocean took place aboard the Norwegian sailing vessel Statsraad Lehmkuhl, between Nice and Monaco. It brought together more than 100 people, including Astrid Puentes Riaño, UN Special Rapporteur on the human right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment; Vidar Helgesen, Executive Secretary of UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC); Marit Warncke, Mayor of Bergen; and representatives from India and Nigeria, partners of the Ocean and Human Rights Platform.

Perspectives

The Ocean and Human Rights platform, Knowing & Acting and Nathalie Komatitsch will prepare new ocean and human rights roundtables at One Ocean Week in Bergen, in April 2026. They will bring new ocean and human rights projects to UNOC 4 in Korea, in 2028.

Mission to update a human rights impact assessment for an industrial project

Role and action of Knowing & Acting

Mission to support TotalEnergies' subsidiary in Papua New Guinea, as a follow-up of the completion and publication of the initial human rights impact study by the Danish Institute for Human Rights in 2017.

Results

Identification and validation of needs, identification of a leading regional expert partner, preparation of specifications and partnership agreement.

Perspectives

The industrial project is currently on hold.

Preparation and implementation of a human rights training plan for all employees of a large international group (100,000 employees)

TotalEnergies 2019 - 2021 Worldwide Human Rights

Role and action of Knowing & Acting

Systematic analysis of the jobs to be trained, in conjunction with the operational teams; identification of the functions to be trained as a priority based on the analysis matrix of the Danish Institute for Human Rights; preparation of training materials according to the exposure to risks (face-to-face training for the most exposed - General Managers and management committees of subsidiaries in the most at-risk countries; e-learning for all employees).

Results

More than 40,000 employees trained in e-learning; monitoring and facilitation of training sessions and programs by the company's human rights team; training of several Managing Committees in the most exposed countries; organization with the ethics committee of the Corporate Ethics annual day (130 countries, sessions and programms between headquarters and subsidiaries, etc.).
